I Am Hero of the Future -- Rough Draft

Author's Note: Here is a rough draft on my "I am a Hero of the Future" essay contest submission. The first place winners will receive a $50 gift certificate-- hmmm think that could be me??? Guidelines: less than 400 words... yeah that's about it.

I am a Hero of the Future

Today I see before me hundreds of brave men and women go across seas to fight for freedom and liberty.  The people we see are the heroes of today, they are the ones that show the greatness of our country, these are citizens will fight for a better day, and they are the ones that show children the way of our great nation.  The brave men and women that fight for us are the brave heroes of today and I am a hero of the future.
With shouts and cries of war, with tears shed, and with blood spilled behind enemy lines there are people keeping us safe.  There are people from this country fighting so we do not have to; there are people fighting endlessly through long nights so we may rest our heads after a long day.  For me these are the people I look up to, the people that sacrifice so much to win not for them but for us.  Truth be told, without them we would not be a nation so great and one day I know I too will help this nation fulfill its greatest dreams and victories.
One day I will stand among strangers fighting for one cause and only one cause.  Together we may revolutionize history.  When one of us falls, it will never be in vain.  For a better day, we will stand tall until we find victory.  Every morning the day begins with the “Pledge of Allegiance.”  It is every morning I swear allegiance to America, Old Glory, the Republic, to one great nation under the all-seeing eyes of God, and an indivisible nation guaranteeing liberty and justice for all.  There will be a day that I will act to my pledge and make America the nation all, including me, look up to.  I will fulfill my dream and bravely fight, if not with then behind, for my nation.
Today my peers and I look back and see what America has had done to come to where we are today.  Much of it was luck, or fate, or even a small chance; but a lot of it was pure bravery and patriotism.  If there comes a day my nation will need me, I will not hesitate to respond.  I will stand up and fight for all that I know to keep my loved ones safe.  Today I look at the heroes fighting for us and I see the heroes of the future fighting in the place of the fallen one day.  Today I see me fighting one day in the place of the fallen; I am a hero of the future.

If It Was My "Deadline"

Author's Note: I am currently reading a book called Deadline and the main character in this story has just learned that he is to die in a year due to a blood disease that is very rare and aggressive. He had just turned 18, therefor being considered a grownup, does not have to tell his parents and can make choices for himself. He has a younger brother named Cody in the same grade as him since he started school late, he lives with his father and a mentally- retarded/ suicidal mother, he has his coach to support him: a close family friend and a man that lost the love of his life during high school and never met anyone ever again, and Dallas, a teenage volleyball star that everyone loves including him that REALLY LOVES her. Now that we have some background info, here is a bit of up to date: Ben Wolf is dying and decides to live an entire lifetime in his remaining year and not get treatment, he is "spiritually visited" in his dreams by "Hey-hoos" (Spanish for Jesus), he wonders if "Hey-hoos" is him reflected but later decides it isn't, meets a man named Rudy that is the town drunkard and one of the most interesting characters that I really wish to tell you about but can't because I don't wanna be a spoiler, Ben is a track senior star that tries out for football in his last year of high school with his brother and makes it, he is dating Dallas Suzuki now and has met her "younger bro" which I want to say something about but won't, and this is a crazy amazing book that you have to read sometime soon! Okay!

Playing on the edge of this cliff is Ben Wolf. Living his last year to the fullest is Ben Wolf. Taking risks and chances is Ben Wolf. Trying to figure out his life is Ben Wolf. Could Ben use some help with his life? Does he need help with his trials? Does he want us to help him be born and grow old in a year? Does he need anyone to slap him to his senses and back away from the cliff? Apparently not. If I was in his place, honestly, I don't know what I'd do. Wolf has understood and has a feeling that even with treatment he will never make it and for that reason, decides that instead of spending his life in a hospital death bed, he will run wild and live free. When a person realizes that life is short, they suddenly become aware that every moment should be lived to the fullest and not wasted. I truly don't understand this, but I think that I can explain it.

Sometimes we, being humans, easily take things for granted. It is only until we lose it we see that what we had was a beauty. Life is something we blow off: "I'm here today, I'll be here tomorrow." But what if we knew that we wouldn't be here tomorrow. Our future that we dreamed of is no longer real. Whether it was having prince charming sweep you off your feet, be a lead guitarist in a band, travel deep space, invent a time machine, or just grow up, get married and be happy, it all just disappeared with the words "I'm sorry, you results came back, you are dying." Three words could demolish an entire life. What would you do in your last year to live. Like Wolf would you keep it a secret and live to the fullest or would you tell everyone you know and have them come over and comfort you for the last year. Now that I think about it, I'd be silent. Having those "I'm Sorry" looks doesn't suit me. If I had told anyone that I was dying, I really would die.

Every moment people staring, whispering, and apologizing would just leave me cold, empty, and wanting more. If I told everyone, I'd always be reminded that I only had a year left. Maybe, just maybe, if I had a second chance, I'd take it all back and only reveal my secret as I lay dying in a hospital bed. Knowing myself, the day I lay in a hospital bed taking my last breaths will be the day I will stop seeing this mirage. Everything we see around us is a mirage. The sun shining from behind the clouds proving to us there is another day or the soft breath of a lover against your face reminding you that there is something that will be with you forever is just another long and everlasting dream. One day when we all fall into an eternal sleep is the day we will truly come to our senses and wake up. Today we spend hour hoarding money, games, jewelry, makeup, and desires only to lose them the next. As long as the hot blood of hard work runs through your veins you will survive; when it runs cold, it will be your final goodbye.

Your blood is running cold every second of your life. Every time that second hand ticks you die a little more. There never is a guarantee that there will be another tick though. Maybe what Ben Wolf did was right. Knowing a secret that hurts us take a lot of strength, but keeping it kills us all in the end. It will only kill you and only hurt the others. Breathe like it's you last breath and live like it's your last moment.  I'm dying as well as you, this world is my deathbed as well as yours, and I'm now slowly waking up from my dream and are you?

Author's Note: Done writing. And I have truly inspired myself... talk about good self-help. Maybe I should be a therapist or something... what do you think???? :) (That's the book cover and it's not upside down)

To Live or Not To Live

Author's Note: After reading the world- famous story of love, tragedy, passion, and betrayal, Hamlet, I have come across one quote throughout the entire play that stands out and requires a through thought to under stand it. Here I have the translation of this quote in my eyes.

Quote: "To be, or not to be: that is the question:
Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles,
And by opposing end them?—To die,—to sleep,—
No more; and by a sleep to say we end
The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks
That flesh is heir to,—’tis a consummation
Devoutly to be wish’d. To die,—to sleep;—
To sleep: perchance to dream:—ay, there’s the rub;
For in that sleep of death what dreams may come,
When we have shuffled off this mortal coil,
Must give us pause: there’s the respect
That makes calamity of so long life;
For who would bear the whips and scorns of time,
The oppressor’s wrong, the proud man’s contumely,
The pangs of despis’d love, the law’s delay,
The insolence of office, and the spurns
That patient merit of the unworthy takes,
When he himself might his quietus make
With a bare bodkin? who would these fardels bear,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life,
But that the dread of something after death,—
The undiscover’d country, from whose bourn
No traveller returns,—puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to others that we know not of?
Thus conscience does make cowards of us all;
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought;
And enterprises of great pith and moment,
With this regard, their currents turn awry,
And lose the name of action."

The voice filled with life, feeling, and death. Lightly are not the words spoken, but with the truth of it all. Hamlet pressured down with the power and grief of events, can no longer stand his life, no longer stand the scenes, and no longer stand the pain. This soliloquy and probably the most famous speech in the English language, is spoken by Hamlet in Act III, scene i (58–90). Hamlet, during this line, proposes if "self-slaughter" or suicide is a logical answer to what is going on in his life. But first, in this quote he proposes the question: "To be or not to be" or in other words: to live or not to live. He next specifies and compares the points of life and death. He compares the differences of life with death and how one feels in both situations. Being a character of high stature, he wishes to do the most noble act; he concludes it is noble to live and suffer life but still wonders if living or dying would seem better to the public. This is said in the line “Whether ’tis nobler in the mind to suffer" / "the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune..." He compares death to sleep and thinks of  it as the end to suffering, pain. However, he argues over the uncertainty it might bring: “The heartache, and the thousand natural shocks" / "That flesh is heir to.” Based on this metaphor, we can see that he decides that suicide is a desirable course of action, “a consummation" / "Devoutly to be wished.” However, the religious word “devoutly” signifies in his quote that there is more to the question: what will happen in the afterlife. Hamlet immediately realizes and he restates his metaphor of sleep to include the possibility of death as dreaming: "To sleep: perchance to dream:—ay, there’s the rub..." He says that the dreams that may come in the sleep of death are daunting, that they “Must give us pause: there’s the respect."

This is where his problem of nobility ends. He now talks through a series of events aiming at the afterlife. He finds that the reason self- slaughter is avoided stated as: "That makes calamity of so long life." Next, from "For who would bear the whips and scorns of time" until "No traveller returns,—puzzles the will" he rambles on about what the possibilities of the afterlife could be made of. He decides that this is why victims of depression would "(And makes us) rather bear those ills we have/ Than fly to others that we know not of."

Hamlet slowly turns down his ranting of death: "Thus conscience does make cowards of us all/ And thus the native hue of resolution/ Is sicklied o’er with the pale cast of thought/And enterprises of great pith and moment/ With this regard, their currents turn awry/ And lose the name of action." The final statements can be interpreted as he too now with others, has his conscience turning him down due to religious reasons and how disgusting suicide can be seen as in the eyes of The Lord and in the eyes of his people. With this, he falls into a moment of silence and wipes the death tolls echo out of his ears slowly sauntering away.

Censoring The Internet

Author's Note: I wrote a paper on why the internet should not be censored, and here it is. I have the sources included, and if any feedback please leave it in comments. Thank You!

For over a decade, we as one world have worked hard to put together a gathering with everything we want to know. This amazingly large gathering, for all Americans, is the information highway. The internet has been America’s way for many years and has been working out well. There is no reason for change and there should be no change. So far, there have not been large problems due to the internet that cannot be controlled and the government should avoid making one now. Censorship is just another excuse for people who want to be dictators to have an option, and when done under the name of “National Security” it cannot be justified. America is not, and should not, be shown as a dictating- hungry country. Censorship will be doing this. Nothing good really comes from this widespread controversy. Censorship of the internet will only lead to a lack of open knowledge, denial of citizen rights and disruption of privacy which can be easily proved.
A major disadvantage due to censorship would be no more free information available to the public. However, if a site was able to stay up and have the information available, it would have to pass through many checks; and if it was allowed there would be many regulations. All posters would have to agree with contracts for free use of information and there would be regulations “including legal regulations on content, technical filtering and blocking websites, self- censorship, the vibrancy/ diversity of online news media, and the use of ICTs for civic mobilization.” (Kelly) Even though that seems like a lot, it all means that no site would be able to have posts that mentioned any other site, person, video, or any form of addressing available to the public; and that is much bigger than it sounds. “From censorship of the Internet, sites which people use everyday will be banned. Free info sites that are open to the public will be cut off from all access. If the Internet is censored, due to copyrights, information sites that have no rule against copyrighting will be banned.” (Ockerbloom) All sites that others can post on will be deleted. Wiki, being a public posting site, would delete due to copyright infringements. Yahoo and public response websites, such as Ask, would be blocked. If the internetwas censored, every word posted would have to go through tests to allow posting. “Some sensitive phrases could not be posted at all.” (MacKinnon) Even though most rude comments and abuses would be filtered, there no longer would be quick responses. Most people depend on these quick responses for questions and censorship takes this away from the public. Over 50 percent of Americans use Yahoo, Wiki, and similar sites for answers. Not only would response site be blocked, online dictionaries would be censored, too. Online dictionaries are sometimes public and can have the public add comments and posts to them. For this reason, they would result in blockage since according to law all resources MUST be stated. Censoring would cause “infractual and economic barriers to access, legal ownership control over internet service providers (ISPs), and independence of regulatory bodies.” (Kelly) Almost all educational things be blocked, but entertainment too would be censored.
Entertainment used without permission is illegal. Almost all music will be blocked, if the censorship bill becomes law, due to songs are only allowed to be on broadcast websites with user copyrights. However, user copyrights do not apply to public broadcasting. Music video sounds would be filtered off unless there is direct permission from the writer, producer, or singer. It takes a matter of weeks to get permission for non- granted uses. Occasionally, songs would be allowed to be used for education or similar purposes but, only if they were less than a 30 seconds long. However, since most people are not willing to post only 30 seconds worth of songs, many songs would no longer be available to the public indirectly. This means social broadcast sites like You Tube and Hulu would all be filtered. Over 35 percent of content off every broadcast site would be deleted. Anyone using or uploading “illegal” posts without direct permissions, could be fined. Actions such as these would not help us but rather hurt us; they would just lead to a poorer economy and that is the last thing we need. Not only does music copyrights apply to private uses but to the public. And, the public was promised no law destroying open rights and freedom.
The internet is public; the people made it for the people. Citizen rights are denied with censorship by the government. “We need to understand conflicts of intellectual freedom, not as something negative or practiced by those less enlightened than ourselves, but as a process in which we are all participants playing various roles based on age, family background, societal position, religious beliefs, and profession.” (Vandergrift) The people worked to make the internet and now should be allowed to use it as they wish. Not only does censorship deny country- wide public uses but also private uses.
People through the U.S. are guaranteed their privacy and their control of what happens to them personally. If censoring was legalized their no longer be the guarantee of the free net. Parents, who are given full responsibility of their children, no longer have complete control. The parents of children are told that what they think is right is most likely the best for the child; with censorship, the government would do most of the thinking and controlling. It is the parent’s personal responsibility to what their kids can have on the web and not the ENTIRE NATION’S. The internet is a free “gathering of knowledge” given to the public. It is a right to everyone and not a privilege. Americans are promised rights to everything that will not harm others or themselves; with censorship, this is exactly what is happening.
The government is harming the people by taking away what is theirs. Censorship partly denies “freedom of speech.” If the citizens are no longer to talk about what they want for themselves, nobody will be able to. Social sites and broadcasts sites are often used to send messages out to everyone and music in background or even singing of copyrighted songs can have posts deleted. These sites allow people to raise public awareness about problems. People, who depend on these sites, really would prefer a world without censoring. In reality, not many people want censorship at all. Only 2 in 30 people in the United States agree with censorship. Not only that, only 16 out of 100 senators were for censorship during voting. In addition, the biggest effect, the President even disagrees with censoring.
Mr. President disagreeing is a lawful thing since censorship is even against the Constitution. The first amendment clearly states that there should be no law prohibiting free exercise.
“Amendment I: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”
This breaks the U.S.’s own law that has worked for everyone for the last few decades. If the people who made it break the Constitution, it would result in major news spreading quickly. There could be an arousal of possible protests or problems in the future. China is a perfect example of what could happen; China had protests after it was censored. In addition, Australia had protests to after censorship of the internet. The people of this nation rarely stand for abrupt changes. There may be results in unfortunate relations with the government. If censorship is allowed, there may be outbreaks and protests across the nation. United States is also filled with opinionated people and a protest in in the U.S. in much more likely to occur versus than any other country. Honestly, this could lead to a slight rebellion just as it did in previous countries. Even though censorship may sound all bad, there are a few legitimate reasons.
The idea of censoring the internet first came up when PIPA (Protect IP Act) and SOPA (The Stop Online Piracy Act), two bills, were first passed to the government. While the Obama administration has come out against SOPA and has put SOPA to a halt for time being, the very similar PIPA bill is still alive and well. Both PIPA and SOPA wanted to have the internet censored for one of two main reasons: to avoid identity theft/ avoid intrusion of privacy. However, PIPA’s plan was tried and failed miserably. Even though SOPA no longer positions a hurdle, PIPA still is a threat to the nation’s freedom. PIPA not only wants the government to censor but the entertainment industry to have power also.
The PIPA idea was tested and resulted in a 12-year old boy sued for music use. In addition, many uploads have been attempted to be brought down due to music playing in the background. The first MP3 Player’s were shelved – in back storage- for some time because the entertainment industry was upset about people enjoying their music without directly buying it from them and risking a loss of money. Is this the type of industry we want to control our rights? That is why we now all buy music directly or through music industry branches and have a user agreement contract to all these sites. The profits from music feed the entertainment industry’s mouth and keep it quiet. The SOPA and PIPA bills would also allow rights to holders to cut of the source of funding of any potentially infringing web site.  Meaning any other companies doing business with sites by ads would have to stop. Whether that means advertising, links in search engines, or any other listings would have to be removed. But even this would not be helpful.
The reason that blocking a domain name is not effective is because any blocked site can still be accessed via its numeric IP address. For example, if “lifehacker.com” became blocked, you could still find it by visiting a number-based address. In fact, before the bills were even supposed to come to a vote, tools were created to automatically route domain names to their IP addresses to render completely this measure of SOPA and PIPA useless. The domain name reason has been used to attempt censoring of the internet previously many times, but to our luck, it never was successful. However, there is another reason that both PIPA and SOPA hold.
The other major reason that there is the idea of internet censorship is that copyrights are being broken daily. However, there are punishments for such actions. Sometime, fines are placed and depending on the severity of the copyright, fines can reach over $600. Community Service is also a very popular punishment for plagiarism. Not only are adults punished, there are many lists of possible student punishments. Students, who are offenders, can receive detentions. Teachers often fail students for plagiarism. Moreover, some schools are very serious and plagiarism in schools like these result in expelling. After consequences, students do realize severity of plagiarism and rarely commit it again. Plagiarism is not as widespread as it as it is told to be, often occurring in elementary, middle, and occasionally high school. It is rarely committed at a severe level, however. In addition, as stated before, there are many punishments for it. Seventy percent of people admit to plagiarism but plagiarism does not go unnoticed. After consequences, only about 1 out of 75 students attempt to plagiarize again. Even though plagiarism is illegal and censoring could prevent this, what do we have betting that this “censoring the internet” plan will actually work out. Analyzing says that the bill will not follow through, if it becomes law, and will become  very inefficient for the future. Unfortunately, the government and some of Congress are blind to this.
Google, Facebook, Twitter, Zynga, eBay, Mozilla, Yahoo, AOL, and LinkedIn released a letter to Congress, saying that if the bills passed, they would have to monitor constantly their content for copyright infringement, before it goes up, or face litigation. Some of these groups even “censored” their logos as a protest against the bills. Even though all this effort was put in, there still were Congress members that could not realize what the outcome of censoring could be. Many sites would shut down because whatever is posted becomes is the responsibility of the site it is posted on. Continues monitoring of every public site would take much time up and could possibly result in sites shutting down. Some sites, that are unable to monitor properly, would be sued and shut down. Links on sites could cause suing or law cases. Links and site names would be taken off, messing with the basic layout of the internet causing weakened privacy for anyone on the web.
Meddling with the main workings of the internet would mean most online private firewalls would be corrupted, making sites prone to viruses and other sites- virus magnets. Any information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and usernames can be hacked and followed. Every movement on the web could fall into the hands of the wrong person. When the internet becomes censored, not only will it affect just the internet, but it will too affect our lives. Every moment of people will be tracked and spied. What we do today will really be with us forever, and those “privacy promises” sites promise, will no longer exist. Many do not understand what censorship will do beyond “blocking” sites, what they do expect though, is censorship is going to happen and we will be safer. However, unfortunately, this is not true.
These people who want censorship do not see how it could affect the world. “The purpose of these bills are to make it harder for sites — especially those located outside the United States — to sell or distribute pirated copyrighted material such as movies and music as well as physical goods such as counterfeit purses and watches.”(Magid) This would lead to a slightly better economy, but if anyone looks back at the very similar past, drug dealings weren’t stopped, illegal immigrants weren’t stopped, oversea thefts weren’t stopped and chances are counterfeit items sold to other nations will not be stopped either. The bill, if passed, would require every site to refrain links to any other sites that are “dedicated to the theft of U.S. property.” It would also prevent companies from adding advertisements or links on the sites and block payment companies like Visa, MasterCard and PayPal from transmitting funds to the site. The problem with this is that the entire site would be affected, not just that portion that is promoting the distribution of illegal material or merchandise. The bill would also cut off funding by prohibiting payment services from cooperating with infringing sites. Many things would be put to play with censoring “including (complete) surveillance, (intrusion of) privacy, and repercussions for online activity such as imprisonment, extra legal harassment, or cyber attacks.” (Kelly) “Just because law states that good should happen, does not mean good will happen. Over half of the internet will be filtered and erased.”(Walske) “The Internet is a crucial medium through which people can express themselves and share ideas and has become an increasingly important tool through which democracy and human rights activists and all Americans mobilize and advocate for political, social, and economic reform.” All people need something for communication and the internet is what this communication is.
We as Americans hold our right to have a say in a nationwide decisions. To avoid major controversy, the idea of censoring the internet should be dropped. Everyday sites are shutting down to spread awareness of our very possible and near future. One day we will all wake up and find our favorite sites like YouTube, Face Book, Wiki, and Twitter filtered, blocked, or deleted FOREVER. There aren’t many advantages to censoring the internet and only a few really agree with censorship. It is the right of the people to correct the government as needed; it has been done before and there is nothing stopping it from happening again.

You Are...

Author's Note: If you're still single this Valentine's do us all a favor, stop worrying and do something for yourself. This is one day if you love yourself, your NAWT narcissist.

If you understand
A dreamer you are
Believing the world
Believing your heart

If you understand
A risk taker you are
Breathing, living at the edge
Breathing, living on sheer excitement

If you understand
A lover you are
Kissing the air as it kisses you
Kissing the words escaping from lips

If you understand
A follower you are
Coming and guiding the end
Coming and loving the missed sights

If you understand
A leader you are
Making a point and keeping it
Making a oath to guidance

If you understand
A believer you are
Knowing the truth and hearts of man
Knowing the beauty of everything

If you understand
A human you are
Living what others don't
Living like there's no tomorrow

If you don't qualify as any of these, pick one you want to be. Oh yeah, for starters, start living like there is no tomorrow. Don't miss out on anything, and the world will fall into your hands. Don't stay depressed; without the rain, we'd never see a rainbow.

Who am I?

You can always depend on me.
Our bond is the greatest of mankind.
Under one sky, I will always help you.
Right when you need me, I will arrive.
First priority is family, next is you.
Remembering the past is a happy thing for us.
Inside my head, my respect keeps building.
Even when I say that I hate you, I love you.
Nobody could tear us apart.
Don't even try to lie to me, because I know you too well.
Who am I?

Fire of Unity

Author's Note: My sister had to do a poem on "unity" and how she felt about it and since she's failing L/A she came to me who is breezing along. So obviously being a great sister *sinister laugh* I "helped" her write her poem. I wrote all of it... oops.... I mean she wrote all of it, with like THAT much of my help. :)

We all stand round
With our hands held out
We all reach towards a horizon of dreams
With thoughts and ideas
We all see different
However underneath, is a strand of unity

Let this strand grow
Let it strengthen and shine
Let it overcome all wrong and make all right
This strand of unity is our future
What we do today will be with us forever
Let all hate disappear overcome by unity

We are a band of brothers and men
We are a line of brave soldiers all for a singular cause
We fight through all sorrows all end up on top
From blood 'tis not relation but from our very hearts
With every beat and every sound
Let unity transcend

Let love, peace, and unity transcend
Let it become a ribbon
Let it fly and float in the breeze
We then all will be touched
Not harmed nor hurt
But touched by our own unity covering us as a warm blanket of softness

As we stand round the fire from hearts
Let us keep this flam alight
It is a symbol of all us as one
Let it burn and glow lighting dark times
We should never part, stay as one
Stay together, close as one

Without one we are none
Without each other we are none
Without unity we are none
Keep unity in our souls
Never let it slip through fingers like sand
Keep them fire burning bright
Let unity light the darkest  times

Proof of Money Truly Isn't Happiness

You’ve heard the axiom a thousand times: Money doesn’t buy happiness. Your parents told you this, and so did your priest. Still, if you’re like me, you would just as soon see for yourself if money buys happiness. People throughout history have insisted on striving to get ahead in spite of the well-worn axiom. America as a nation has struggled and striven all the way to the top of the world economic pyramid. Are we suffering from some sort of collective delusion, or is it possible that money truly does buy at least a certain amount of happiness?
Americans have on average gotten much richer over the past several decades than they were in previous generations. The inconvenient truth, however, is that there has been no meaningful rise in the average level of happiness.

In 1972, 30 percent of Americans said they were very happy, and the average American enjoyed about $25,000 (in today’s dollars) of our national income. By 2004, the percentage of very happy Americans stayed virtually unchanged at 31 percent, while the share of national income skyrocketed to $38,000 (a 50 percent real increase in average income).

The story is the same in other developed countries. In Japan, real average income was six times higher in 1991 than it was in 1958. During the post–World War II period, Japan was transformed at unprecedented speed from a poor nation into one of the world’s richest countries. But the average happiness of a Japanese citizen, measured on a scale of 1–4, stayed exactly the same at 2.7.

In some countries, there is even some evidence that economic growth can create unhappiness. This is generally the case for nations experiencing rapid and chaotic development and thus opportunities for great wealth for the first time. Post-Soviet Russia is an example of this phenomenon. In the 1990s, after the fall of the Soviet Empire, a few entrepreneurs made vast fortunes in markets for oil and other primary resources. Yet post-Soviet Russia is a miserable place in which only about one in five citizens say they are very happy about their lives. Some development economists believe that cases of a few lucky entrepreneurs suddenly amassing large fortunes raised unreasonable expectations among ordinary Russians, creating a sense of extreme unfairness and leaving them deeply dissatisfied with their meager lot. And in this way, money created unhappiness. So individual countries don’t seem to get much happier as they get richer. But are rich countries happier than poor countries?

The answer to this question depends on how poor a “poor country” is. People in poor countries where much of the population lives below subsistence level are much unhappier than people in rich countries, on average. International comparative studies of happiness consistently place the poorest nations of the world—especially the countries of sub-Saharan Africa—at the very bottom.

In 2006, one study ranking countries in terms of happiness found that Zimbabwe and Burundi were the unhappiest places on earth. And this makes sense, of course: It is ridiculous to imagine that illiteracy, high child mortality, and the threat of starvation are any more pleasant or bearable to a Burundian than they would be to an American. But once countries get past the prosperity level that solves large-scale health and nutrition problems, income disparity pales in comparison with other factors in predicting happiness, such as culture and faith.

For example, compare Mexico and France. The cost-of-living difference between the two nations is vast, so economists don’t compare raw income; rather, they compare the “purchasing power” of citizens. In Mexico—a nation in which most people live above the level of subsistence but still are much poorer than residents of the United States or Europe—the average purchasing power was about a third what it was in France in 2004. And yet Mexicans, in aggregate, are happier than the French. In Mexico, 63 percent of adults said they were very happy or completely happy. In France, only 35 percent gave one of these responses.

It might be tempting to dismiss the happiness of Mexicans as delusional or a reflection of the fact that most Mexicans have no idea what life with material wealth is like. But this would be a mistake: There is simply no evidence that Mexicans lack an understanding of true happiness compared to the French. A more reasonable conclusion is that Mexican happiness—and French unhappiness—are caused in large measure by forces other than money.

American communities are like countries when it comes to happiness. Like happy Mexico and unhappy France, the happiness of American communities—all of which are above the level of subsistence—depends very little on their comparative prosperity. There are abundant examples of unhappy high-income communities and happy low-income communities. Take eastern Tennessee (which includes the cities of Chattanooga and Knoxville, but is mostly rural), where people are 25 percent likelier than people living in tony San Francisco to say they are very happy, despite earning a third less money on average. Obviously, it is more expensive to live in San Francisco than it is to live in Tennessee, but San Franciscans still enjoy more than 30 percent more disposable income.

Like nations and communities, as long as they don’t start out dangerously impoverished,  individuals get little or no extra happiness as they get richer—even massively richer. In a classic 1978 study, two psychologists interviewed 22 major lottery winners and found that the joy of sudden wealth wore off in a few months. Further, lottery winners have a harder time than the rest of us enjoying life’s prosaic pleasures: watching television, shopping, talking with friends, and so forth. It’s as if the overwhelming experience of winning the lottery dulls the enjoyable flavors of ordinary life.

My eyes were opened with the sad tale of Mack Metcalf (which you can look up yourselves). In truth, it doesn’t necessarily destroy your life to win the lottery, as it evidently did his, but it won’t make your life better either.

So it’s true: Money doesn’t bring enduring happiness for countries, communities, or individuals, except perhaps when people start out in abject poverty. Why not? The answer has to do with what psychologists call “adaptation.” Humans tend to adapt psychologically to their circumstances—including their monetary circumstances—and do so very quickly.

Amir and Adam,Vise and Versa: Somehow the Same...

He decided to charge into fields of bloodshed and battle, but he ran away from every drop of blood. Adam charged forward to fight for freedom, while Amir backed away from every firing bullet. One attacked forth with foolishness while the other ran and hid due to foolishness. There are so many differences between Adam Cooper from April Morning and Amir from The Kite Runner; yet after the obvious there are many like characteristics between these two people.

In the beginning of both books everything is normal; both characters are living an easy life as young boys. Adam Cooper is always receiving praises from all of his family members for being “a good boy.”(5) Meanwhile, Amir is living an easy life also; “he’s not violent” (22) or mean. However, there is one character from both books that does not like either boy. In both stories, the father is always disapproving of everything and anything either Adam or Amir need or do. For example, Amir is put down by his father, whom he calls Baba, during a conversation between Baba and his adviser, Rahim Khan; “If I’d never seen the doctor pull him out of my wife with my own eyes I’d never believe he’s my own son.” (23) Adam faces a similar situation. His father too dislikes Adam’s actions and intentions. On page 16 of April Morning, Adam’s father, Moses, clearly states “Why am angry, Adam? Is it because you repeated some foolish doggerel?... Hardly… What you did is a display of ignorance!” But, this hatred between both sets of father and son was not to last. Soon, a new terror would come; hiding blue skies with clouds of storm.

With a yell and a cry, a new wind was blowing. A sour, bitter wind licked the faces of pedestrians. This new wind was a wind of war. War came to Adam. War came to Amir. During this part in both books, the father’s seem to forgive their sons. Overcoming differences, a bit of love is shown. It doesn’t matter that they may have failed tasks, no longer did it matter. This is another similarity between the main characters from these two books. In both these stories, the two boys earn their father’s respects and pride. Even though pride was earned later into the story, there had been people supporting the boys all along.

Adam had been supported by his grandmother and Ruth his girlfriend. Both of these side characters had always given Adam full support. But, Adam isn’t the only one who was supported. Amir, he too had been supported by two other characters in his early life: Rahim Khan and Hassan, his unsaid best friend, his worker, and his half- brother. For both Amir and Adam, their two supporters had been there for them. They had helped him and shown him strength. However there was one difference between the connection and relationships of these characters. That difference was loyalty.

Loyalty comes in often throughout both stories. For Amir, it was when his best friend, Hassan, was being raped. It was a startling event. Amir had stood there in shock and later ran away without having second thoughts. The trust, friendship, and loyalty between these two boys had been betrayed. Even though Amir may have betrayed loyalty to the closest of the close, Adam never did. He had stuck on through, being careful with every move and thought. Adam had never even betrayed any trust or loyalty even during his fight. Not once through the war did Adam run without a valid reason. This had been a great difference between Amir and Adam. Amir, as we later realize, had done a lot of foolish mistakes out of fear. This is basically the opposite of Adam’s actions. In April Morning, Adam commits many foolish mistakes out of ignorance.

Adam, being young, ignorant and foolish had signed the muster roll. This gave him a one way path to war. If he had been lacking the proper equipment, it would have been a one way path to death. Amir being a bit more mature and having a slightly more over- protective father had escaped his hometown which was under attack by the Russians. While one decided to run into war, the other had concluded to run out of war. Even though both characters regret their actions they do agree that what they had done had made them into the person they are today.

Being turned into someone new takes a while and for both these characters it truly did. Over years both boys worked hard to become men. And when they did, they faced challenges, they faced changes, and then finally faced their fears. Even though Adam and Amir had never lived identical lives, they had had similar experiences. If the two characters had sat down for lunch together on a bright sunny day and talked about their experiences, they would’ve found so many similarities. It’s unbelievable that two characters with completely different backgrounds could be alike. This could be true for you and me too. Just because a moment occurred, lifetimes were altered, decisions were made, and secretly two lives were entwined.
